Why I Started Embrace Literacy

Meet Karen Yuen

I started tutoring using The Barton Reading & Spelling System when I discovered my youngest daughter is dyslexic.  Since then I’ve discovered that some of my other children are also dyslexic, and that I myself am dyslexic.  Being dyslexic allows me to understand firsthand the struggles my students encounter, but also enables me to encourage them about their many magnificent strengths!

In spite of my own challenges, I attended rigorous private K-12 schools and was able to graduate in the top 5% of my high school.  I went on to graduate from a four year university and work in finance in many executive roles, included as a Global Project Manger overseeing projects that literally spanned the world.  Most of my projects had budgets in the millions of dollars, were complex, and required me to constantly think outside the box to creatively solve business issues to save time and money.  I am also Six Sigma Greenbelt Certified, which means I am able to apply statistics to measure and solve business problems in creative cost-effective ways.

I also graduated valedictorian at New Life Bible College, while simultaneously concluding my coursework at California State University, Sacramento.  Impressive for someone who was kicked out of her kindergarten reading program and told to go play while the other kids learned how to read.  I felt isolated, left out, and very stupid.  Ironically, I later found out I had the highest IQ in my entire K-8 class.

My success is a testament that anyone with dyslexic tendencies, including your child or yourself, will accomplish great things throughout life utilizing the best interventions and therapy, and you can start succeeding right now!
